cello lessons with jules

Hi there! Thanks for coming by :)

I am passionate about education and spreading the cello love to people of all ages and abilities. I look forward to getting to know you, and learning how I can help you achieve your goals.

What are you like as a teacher?

My teaching philosophy is simple: my approach revolves around the unique needs and goals of each of my individual students, nurturing growth and love of the instrument.

I don’t believe in one magical way to teach everyone, and I use the many tools at my disposal, including deep knowledge of repertoire and technical methods; experience in many genres of music; and understanding of historical perspectives, to tailor lessons to each of my students’ personal needs.

Jules is a talented, patient, motivated teacher. We had been through several teachers and were almost ready to give up. She understands my child’s way of learning and adapts well to get the most out of him in every lesson. Highly recommended.

Where do you teach?

In addition to my Brooklyn private studio, I teach on the faculty at Hunter College. I previously taught at the Preparatory Center for Music at Queens College, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College Preparatory Center, Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, and City College of New York. I’ve also curated educational programs for school engagement in and around New York City, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Blue Hill, Maine.

What’s your musical background and training?

My training includes long-term Suzuki teacher training (books 1-10) from the School for Strings under the guidance of Pamela Devenport, with additional training in books 1, 4, and 8 with Dr. Tanya Lesinsky Carey. I received a DMA in cello performance from the Graduate Center at CUNY, a Masters degree from Cleveland Institute of Music and an Artist Diploma from SUNY Purchase. I’ve spent time at many summer festivals, as well, including Kneisel Hall, Taos School of Music, Tanglewood, and Banff Centre.

My first love is chamber music, but I have played in many different environments: orchestras, folk and rock bands, and chamber ensembles, as well as solo. For more about my performance experience, you can visit my About Page.

What will my first lesson be like?

We will get to know one another by talking a little about your background and goals, and you’ll also play a bit for me. From there we can discuss repertoire, technical studies, and other resources that we will use in lessons together.

If you’re a beginner, I can’t wait to help you get started! Ahead of time, we’ll discuss places to either buy or rent a cello and at your first lesson we’ll jump right in and make some sounds. From there, depending on your goals, we will decide together on some method books and pieces to play. Much of the first few lessons will be focused on holding the instrument and bow with confidence and ease, as well as basic music literacy, if applicable.

Jules is an absolutely wonderful teacher. I’m an adult student, and I looked long and hard for a teacher who would be right for me. After nearly a year of false starts I found Jules. She is a gifted musician who’s passionate about the cello and patient with a beginner like me. When I play a scale or a song, she can identify exactly what I need do to enhance my tone. Her pedagogical approach combines a keen, intuitive sense and a wide breadth of knowledge. In short, Julies is stellar and it’s a joy to be her student.

No matter your skill level or age, I am eager to meet you where you are and help you succeed in your cello goals, whatever they may be.
